House cleaning costs: what changes the time and price?
Understand what affects house cleaning costs, how extra tasks change the time, and how to compare quotes for your Toorak or Melbourne home.

House cleaning cost depends on the hours needed, the work agreed and whether the visit is regular or one-off. To compare quotes fairly, look at the total for the same scope, not just the hourly rate. A home's starting condition and your priorities can matter as much as its size.
For households in Toorak and nearby Melbourne suburbs, a useful starting point is simple: decide what you would most like taken care of, then allow enough time to do it properly. Here is what to consider before choosing a clean.
Start with what the price covers
An hourly clean gives you an agreed amount of cleaning time. The cleaner works through the priorities that fit within those hours. A fixed-scope quote prices a defined set of tasks, so it is important to check exactly what is included and what happens if the home's condition differs from the description.
Neither format tells you everything on its own. Before comparing two estimates, ask:
- Is this an hourly visit or a price for an agreed list of tasks?
- How many cleaners will attend, and how many total cleaner-hours are included?
- Which rooms and tasks are priorities?
- What is the minimum booking, and what is the total payable?
- What happens if more time is needed?
Cleaner-hours are worth clarifying. Two cleaners working for two hours provide four cleaner-hours, even though the visit lasts two hours. Alquimia's online estimates are for one cleaner, so three selected hours mean a three-hour visit.
Why similar homes can need different amounts of time
Bedrooms and bathrooms help form an initial estimate, but they cannot describe everything a cleaner will encounter.
Starting condition
A home with light, regular upkeep may need a different amount of attention from one with built-up kitchen grease or bathroom residue. Let the cleaner know about areas that need more work before the visit. This makes it easier to agree a realistic scope rather than discover a mismatch on the day.
Surfaces and access
Clear, accessible surfaces allow more of the visit to be spent cleaning them. Belongings covering a benchtop, delicate finishes or rooms that are difficult to access can change how the work is approached. Mention any surfaces that need particular products or care.
Your priorities
Two households may want different things from the same number of hours. One might prioritise bathrooms, kitchen surfaces and floors. Another may want those essentials plus the inside of the oven. The second request needs a different time allowance or a different balance of tasks.
For example, consider two similarly sized apartments. In one, the request is for routine surface and floor cleaning. In the other, the request also includes empty kitchen cupboards and an empty fridge. The bedroom count is the same, but the scope is not.
Our guide to choosing cleaning hours can help you find a starting point. The final priorities and duration are agreed before your booking is confirmed.
Allow time for the extras you actually want
An appliance interior is different from wiping its outside during a regular kitchen clean. Check whether additional tasks are included, charged separately or allowed for through extra cleaning time.
At Alquimia, the calculator uses these planning allowances:
| Optional priority | Time added to the recommendation |
|---|---|
| Empty fridge interior | 30 minutes |
| Empty kitchen cupboard interiors | 1 hour |
| Standard domestic oven interior | 1 hour |
The overall recommendation is rounded up to whole hours. These allowances guide the estimate; the condition and scope still need to be agreed. Larger, double or heavily soiled ovens require a separate assessment. Appliance disassembly and specialist restoration are not included.
There is no fixed task charge added on top of the hourly total. If you choose more hours, the estimate increases at the applicable hourly rate. If you keep the same number of hours, we need to agree which priorities can realistically fit.
A worked example: at Alquimia's current regular-visit rates, three hours cost $175 and four hours cost $230. Choosing one more hour adds $55 in this example. The final scope still needs to suit the time selected. See our current prices and booking information for the applicable rates and conditions. All amounts are in Australian dollars. Compare the total, equipment and scope together
A lower headline hourly rate does not, by itself, show which quote suits your home. Use the same description of the job when speaking to different cleaners.
A useful comparison checklist is:
- Total price: confirm the full amount, including any applicable taxes or fees, rather than assuming the headline rate is the final total.
- Time and people: compare total cleaner-hours and the number of cleaners attending.
- Included work: list your essential tasks and any appliance interiors or other additional priorities.
- Equipment and products: ask what you need to provide and flag special surface requirements.
- Changes: check how extra time or a different scope would be agreed before work proceeds.
- Booking status: distinguish an enquiry or estimate from a confirmed appointment.
For Alquimia visits, please provide a working vacuum cleaner and mop. For hygiene, your floor-cleaning equipment stays dedicated to your home rather than being shared between properties. We bring the other cleaning tools and agree product requirements with you before the visit. Our home-cleaning service details explain the scope and equipment arrangements.
A clear starting point for your home
Before requesting an estimate, note your bedrooms and bathrooms, the areas that matter most, and any additional tasks you would like considered. Tell us about the starting condition and any access or surface-care requirements, without sharing access codes or sensitive information in the form.
If you are looking for deep cleaning, email us directly. We assess these requests case by case and discuss the scope, time and price before confirming; deep cleaning is not an automatically bookable package.
Ready to explore the options? View your cleaning estimate and tell us your priorities. Your request gives us a starting point for a conversation. The date, scope and price are agreed with you before the booking is confirmed.
Common questions
How much does a house cleaner cost in Melbourne?
At Alquimia, regular home visits are A$60 per hour for the first two hours and A$55 per hour after that. One-off visits are A$70 per hour. Both have a two-hour minimum for one cleaner, making the starting estimate A$120 for a regular visit or A$140 for a one-off visit. These rates were checked on 31 October 2026; see our booking information for current prices and conditions.
Is regular cleaning priced differently from a one-off visit?
At Alquimia, yes. Weekly, fortnightly and monthly home visits use the regular rate structure, including the first visit. One-off visits use a different hourly rate. Both have a two-hour minimum. Check the current booking information before choosing your hours.
Are oven and fridge interiors included automatically?
No. At Alquimia they are optional, time-based priorities to include when planning your visit. Additional selected hours increase the estimate at the applicable rate, without a separate fixed task charge on top.
Can I keep the same hours and change the priorities?
You can discuss a different balance of tasks. The agreed hours still limit what can be completed, so adding a task may mean giving another area less attention. Any change in hours or scope is agreed before proceeding.
